What is Plasma?

Plasma means an ionized state in which electrons are separated from atoms or molecules by applying strong energy to the gaseous state, and has strong sterilizing ability. The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that cold plasma technology will be a new hope for sterilizing viruses.

Air purifiers use multiple layers of filters to filter out fine dust in the air. The HEPA filter can remove 99.95% of fine dust over 0.3 micrometers (one millionth of a meter). However, since viruses are nanometer (one billionth of a meter) in size, even HEPA filters cannot filter them out. Air purifiers cannot remove viruses or bacteria.

Can ‘UV sterilization method’ remove viruses or bacteria in the air? In photocatalytic methods using ultraviolet lamps and UV LEDs, only ultraviolet rays are emitted. If the surface of a fixed object such as a toothbrush or cup is exposed to ultraviolet rays from a short distance for a long time, a sterilization effect can be obtained. However, viruses and bacteria floating in the air are difficult to sterilize with ultraviolet light.

Some products use the term ‘plasma ionizer’. Since the ionizer only generates negative ions and positive ions, and does not emit light or reactive species like low-temperature atmospheric pressure plasma, it cannot be called plasma and has limited sterilizing ability. The ionizer can only remove dust or bacteria charged by negative ions or positive ions by electrically adsorbing them.
